An Android tablet with a screen size of 6-8 inches is recommended. The device should be a high-quality device with:

  • Ability to vibrate on successful button taps (not every Android tablet supports this feature)
  • A quality responsive touch-screen
  • A long-lasting battery with enough life to get through a scheduled day of competition, or enough devices to rotate fresh devices as needed
  • A high-quality WiFi radio that can reliably communicate with the Internet-hosted scoring service
  • All system updates installed and all unnecessary apps removed
  • Notifications disabled and screen rotation locked
  • Sound output muted

The following tablets have been used and tested in competition settings and recommended:

  • Lenovo Tab 4 8 (this is different that the 8E or E8 which is not recommended due to a lower build quality and lack of vibration)
  • Samsung Tab A - 2019 (model SM-T290)

Using a personal device is strongly discouraged because theses devices will often pop up notifications or have unpredictable behavior due to an untested combination of device, apps and settings.

The tablet should NOT be set up with a Google account. This will prevent the device from getting emails, alerts and automatic installations of unnecessary software.

Open Chrome on the tablet and install Jump Rope Judge from this link: https://bit.ly/jrj-app. When prompted, approve the security permissions needed to install the app from this location.

WARNING

It is strongly recommended to not use the Google Play version of Jump Rope Judge. That release is primarily good for training and testing, but not recommended for competitions. The installation link above delivers more current updates and will always make sure the correct version is installed. Also, Google Play Store requires that the tablet be logged into a GMail account which will bring along other apps, updates, emails, notifications and chat apps. These can all interrupt judging.

The judge tablets must have reliable access to the Internet. They use a tiny amount of data for a typical scoring session (0.1GB, often much less) but the connection must be reliable for scores to push reliably. (See Network Setup for more details.)

Each tablet should be fully charged and have the latest version of Jump Rope Judge installed.
